Supernova SN2012aw in M95

Update: This is now confirmed (as of 03/23/2012) that it is a Type IIp supernova in M95.

A few days ago (March 18-19) there were reports of Supernova in M95 a bar-spiral galaxy which is 38 million light years away. The type of the supernova is yet to be determined. If confirmed, this will be the third supernova in popular bright Messier Galaxies (Whirlpool – June, Pinwheel – Aug) in about 9 months.

The image shown here is a 39 minute composite  taken with Canon 60d, Celestron 9.25 mounted on Atlas EQ-G. Orion Auto guider was used to guide subs of 3-5 minutes each.
